The system show you three options around 07.00 hrs:

1st and 3rd option: IC Long-Distance-Train from Rostock to Hamburg = Ticket 15 for full fare tickets and Ticket 16 special high-discounted one-day-excursion tickets. This is very interesting if you are a party of 2, 3, 4 or 5 and you like to have more comfort, speed and a restaurant car...

Explaination scroll below in orange.

If you want just to use one section on IC and use the rest of the day Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Day Pass for the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania) and you are travelling after 9 am: do not forget to adjust the station of origin Rostock instead of Warnemünde. Your day pass is valid after 9 am from Warnemünde to Rostock and valid for public transport in Hamburg. Therefore no need to pay double.

If you want just to use one section on IC and use the rest of the day Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Day Pass for the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania) and you are travelling before 9 am: So buy a regular one-way to Hamburg on IC. Your day pass is valid for the return journey and for public transport in Hamburg.

2nd option: Commuter Trains (S-Bahn) to Warnemünde and Regional Trains from Rostock to Hamburg = Ticket 14 for full fare on Regional Trains

Our specimen is now for the 2nd connection with one transfer in Rostock on regional trains:

So you just click Choose return trip in the third line.

Then you have to select your return journey:

1st and 3rd option is the IC Long-Distance-Train service to Rostock.

2nd option is a Regional Express option.

So select "Purchase" in the second line.

The full fare price will be 61.60 EUR.

If you are willing to buy upto two different tickets you can go for

19.70 EUR as maximum price on Monday to Friday if you travel alone
18.00 EUR as maximum price on Saturday and Sunday if you travel alone
6.90 EUR as mamimum price on Monday to Friday if you travel in a party of 5

And here is the way described how you find the train station from your cruise terminal:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemunde-germany-train-station-guide.html

You can buy the tickets for Hamburg in the station building but due to limited opening hours and language skills let me explain you how to operate the ticket machines which you find after you get up the stairs and reached the station area. The Ländertickets are available here as well, but the price here is higher than in the ticket machines.

UPDATE: August 2009

Both machines have been upgraded to the newest generation which accepts cash and German Bankcards for destinations like Rostock and Bad Doberan and international credit cards for all other destinations as well:

So the new function is the acceptance of Euro-Change and Euro-Bills (max. amount vary to your individual total amount).

Tickets 14, 15 and 16 are available at this machine.

Instructions as well through this link:

On regional trains there is no Reservation (only for annual season tickets for Hamburg).

Only if you are going to Hamburg on Friday, Saturday or Sunday you might better have a reservation if you use the IC long-distance-trains.

After you have clicked "Choose Return Trip" in the 1st or 3rd line of the previous page.

I choosed the IC-connection at 15.16 hrs for Warnemünde: "Purchase".

All ticket options are shown at once. You can decide to buy more expensive tickets or special treatment in 1st class.

You can compare the special fars to the full standard fare at the bottom.

As I guess that you want to travel most economic. If you are travelling alone: 58.00 EUR for saver tickets are cheaper than full paid 40.00 EUR: I would choose the 60.00 EUR ticket to keep my full flexibility Click on "Purchase".

But there is another cheaper way to buy IC-tickets to Hamburg. Scroll down to blue section = Ticket 16.

Click on Ticket without seat reservation - as normally this train is not very full on this section.

Click on Online Ticket to save the shipping costs and you can cancel without problems until the day before your date of travel.

But you need to pay with same the credit card which you need to show to the conductor.

1st and 3rd option of the original request from Warnemünde: Variation to go by IC Long-Distance-Train to and from Hamburg:

Special high-discounted one-day-excursion fare only if you go outward and return journey with IC Long Distance Trains (Freizeit-Ticket = Leisure-Ticket)

This ticket is only valid from Rostock to Hamburg and back. No connecting trains included.

It's 29.00 EUR return fare.

So you need 2 x 1.70 EUR to get from Rostock to Warnemünde = 3.40 EUR and a day pass for Hamburg public transit which is 5.30 EUR:

37.70 EUR total vs. 63.30 EUR the other tickets from Warnemünde to Hamburg.

Even with a group of 5:

145.00 EUR = 29.00 EUR x 5 = Freizeit-Ticket Rostock-Hamburg
13.50 EUR x 1 = Day Group Pass Warnemünde - Rostock
8.95 EUR x 1 = Day Group Pass Public Transport Hamburg
--------------------------------------------------------------------
167.45 EUR total for 5

versus

Super Saver 25 is already 174.00 EUR exkl. Public Transport Hamburg.

The good on Freizeit-Ticket: NO ADVANCE PURCHASE. So you can decide the same morning to go to Hamburg.

So your place of origin is Rostock Hbf.
