Laboe, Germany - Navy Memorial / Submarine Museum

You can click on the pictures to enlarge. So you can easier read the instructions.

Willkommen in Deutschland!
Welcome to Germany!

On the other side of Kiel in the county of Plön there is the Navy-Memorial and Submarine.

It's about 20 km = 14 miles from Kiel and so ferry is a nice option to get there...

especially if the ferry pier is next to the cruise terminal:

You can buy onboard the tickets. If you purchased already before day passes or other tickets and you just want to do one section on the boat: you need to pay surcharge of 1.00 EUR each person and ride.

The schedule from May 18 to September 6, 2009 can be found here:

http://www.sfk-kiel.de/linien/foerde_sommer.html

"montags bis freitags" = Monday to Friday
"samstags, sonn- und feiertags" = Saturday, Sunday and public holiday

Once you get to Laboe it's easy to identify and easy to walk to...

Just as warning: you will neither find too many explainations in English there nor on their website:

http://www.deutscher-marinebund.de/preise_zeiten_me.htm

open 9.30 hrs to 19.00 hrs

Navy Memorial

4.00 EUR for adults
2.50 EUR for soldiers (uniform or ID) or children (6 - 17 yo)
11.00 EUR for family (2 adults + all children (6 - 17 yo)

Submarine

2.50 EUR / 1.80 EUR / 7.20 EUR

Combo-Ticket

5.50 EUR / 3.50 EUR / 15.00 EUR

57 m = approx. 170 feet until the first level... but I did not go the 2nd level as I cannot see downstairs...

The ships are nearby Laboe ferry pier...

In the memorial hall (downstairs) you are requested to take off any kind of hats/caps and to be silent.

Opposite is the submarine and in the background the largest Cruise Ferries of Color Line from Kiel to Oslo.

You better have small change to use the restrooms.

And if it is nice weather and you decide to stay on the beach...

you need to pay for the use of the beach...

And you can hire such beach "baskets" for the day to lock your belongings and have a shady armchair

You can use also the bus back to Kiel. But it's a long ride as there is no bridge before you reach central areas of Kiel.
