Willkommen in Deutschland
Welcome to Germany
You can click on the pictures to enlarge. So you can easier read the instructions.
You can buy your tickets with the busdriver as he sells all local tickets and also all state-wide tickets (SH-Tickets = Schleswig-Holstein-Tickets) which includes travel to Hamburg and Lübeck.
Here you see the transfer options to Central Station:
A taxi would be around 5.00 to 6.00 EUR from Cruise Terminal Ostseekai to Central Station.
But there are reasons not to buy with the driver:
It's a weekday before 09.00 am and you are early and you walk to the central station in about 15-20 minutes.
So you buy at the station at the machine:
Just touch the screen to activate the functions.
Press the "flags" to change language...
Now press on the "Union Jack" (UK Flag) to change to English.
And you see these options:
BLUE: Tickets / Reservations is only important for long-distance-traffic
GREY: Timetable information is good to check your connections
YELLOW: Fahrkarten Schleswig-Holstein-Tarif (SH-Tarif) is good for your tickets to Hamburg and Lübeck
RED: special offers / Collection (Bahn-Tix Rail&Fly) / Laender Tickets and further offers is good for your tickets to Schwerin or Group Day Passes to Hamburg or Lübeck
For Hamburg you are clicking on the YELLOW: Fahrkarten Schleswig-Holstein-Tarif (SH-Tarif).
Next press on "Destinations A...Z"
Press on "Hamburg Hauptbahnhof" (Hamburg Central Station)
The first route "via NMS, Wrist, Elmshorn 19,70 EUR" is the standard railway route towards Hamburg. All others need additional transfers.
"Single Ticket" = Do not forget to buy a return ticket when you are in Hamburg: 19.70 EUR x 2 = 39.40 EUR in total.
"BahnCard" = annual national discount ticket - does not make sense to buy if you are just for one day in Germany and have only a regional train ride.
"Tageskarte / Kleingruppenkarte" = Day Passes or Mini-Group Passes - will be explained later.
"Übergang 1. Klasse" = Usage of 1st class if you have already a vaild 2nd class ticket - (just as reference 29.55 EUR in 1st in total).
"Fahrradtageskarte" = Bike Day Pass
"Child" = 6 years upto 14 years (included)
"SH Card" = annual regional discount ticket - does not make sense to buy if you are just for one day in Germany and have only a regional train ride.
"1st class" = if you like to use 1st class
"Season tickets" = does not make sense for your one day use.
So if you just are travelling alone you could buy 19.70 EUR in cash. Machine will change
If you are going alone to Hamburg and coming back on the same day you better buy a day pass.
It's only 30.00 EUR (less than 39.40 EUR on 2 single tickets... - see above).
BUT THIS TICKET is also valid on all public transport in Hamburg AND Kiel,
i. e. you can use this ticket as well for your return ride on Bus 41, 42 back to the Cruise Terminal Ostseekai
and i. e. you can also buy it with the driver in the bus: EINE TAGESKARTE NACH HAMBURG BITTE.
If you are going in a party of 5 persons or less you can also buy a mini-group day pass (in German: Kleingruppenkarte - translated as collective ticket):
It's 30.70 EUR
but if it is weekday it's valid after 09.00 hrs (On Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays you can also go before 09.00 hrs).
The first train after 09.00 hrs is
dep 09.21 hrs from Kiel - arrives Hamburg at 10.37 hrs
Earlier departures before 09.00 hrs on weekdays means that need you additional tickets to cover the time until 09.00 hrs
There is a 08.55 hrs connection which needs
a) additional transfer in Neumünster (arrives in Hamburg 10.14 hrs)
b) additional tickets to cover the time until 09.00 hrs if you do not want to spend all your money for buying single tickets for each member of your group - so you need to buy single tickets to Flintbek (2.80 EUR / available with the bus driver (FLINTBEK EINFACH BITTE) - or at this machine according to the following instructions for Lübeck.
There is a 08.21 hrs connection which needs
additional tickets to cover the time until 09.00 hrs if you do not want to spend all your money for buying single tickets for each member of your group - so you need to buy single tickets to Elmshorn (13.80 EUR / available with the bus driver (ELMSHORN EINFACH BITTE) - or at this machine according to the following instructions for Lübeck.
There is a 07.53 hrs connection which needs
extra tickets as it is an ICE InterCityExpress Long-Distance-Train and regional tickets are invalid on this train (27.00 EUR pp - for a less-stop ride which is just 6 minutes faster and more expensive. Discounted tickets available if you prebook in internet.)
There is a 07.21 hrs connection with needs
anyway single tickets to Hamburg on weekdays.
Just to complete: for 30.00 EUR you can get also Länderticket Schleswig-Holstein which includes the train rides and public transport but not for the ride from/to the Cruise Terminal Ostseekai.
Advantage: you can buy online according to these instructions, pay per credit card and must not queue up...
But the disadvantage: no refund - i. e. the ship does not call Kiel due to hurricane (which never happened in Baltic Sea)...
So if you like to go to Lübeck (or Flintbek or Elmshorn):
you need here to press an "L" as first letter for Lübeck:
then press "LÜBECK -" for all destinations in Lübeck...
then press "Stadt" which stands for city center...
The trains are going via Plön, Eutin, Bad Schwartau so press accordingly "via Plön, Eutin, Bad Schw. 15,70 EUR"
Same like above for Hamburg...
27.10 EUR for a day pass is cheaper then 2 x 15.70 EUR = 31.40 EUR if you are going alone for a day trip.
But if you are going in a party of 5 passengers and less: 30.20 EUR for a mini-group ticket (Kleingruppenkarte)...
But again: Weekdays after 09.00 hrs - on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays also before 09.00 hrs...
By the way:
Since this week starting Mid of June 2010 the double-track service from Kiel to Lübeck is opened and so there are two trains per hour leaving from Kiel Central Station:
04 minutes past the hour
44 minutes past the hour
Just important if you go before 09.00 hrs on weekdays:
07.44 hrs and earlier from Kiel: the group ticket does not work properly as you will arrive Lübeck before 09.00 hrs. You always will need single tickets to get to Lübeck: 15.70 EUR or a day pass for singles which is valid before 09.00 hrs: 27.10 EUR per person. So if you are going with a party of two: cheaper to buy 2 single day passes. When you are 3, 4 or 5 in your group: buy single tickets to Lübeck and a group day pass for 30.20 EUR for the intra-Lübeck part and return journey.
08.04 hrs and you need additional single tickets to Pönitz(Holst): 10.10 EUR per person (can be bought with the bus driver in Kiel if you board the bus at the cruise terminal or at the machine at the train station)
08.44 hrs and you need additional single tickets to Preetz: 4.00 EUR per person (can be bought with the bus driver in Kiel if you board the bus at the cruise terminal or at the machine at the train station)
09.04 hrs and you need ONLY additional tickets to the Central Station from the Cruise Terminal if you dislike to walk the 20 minutes before: 2.20 EUR per person (can be bought with the bus driver in Kiel if you board the bus at the cruise terminal)
As above told: for 30.00 EUR you can buy Ländertickets Schleswig-Holstein. But due to the difference of 0.20 EUR or 0.70 EUR it only makes major sense when you book the ticket as online ticket. Otherwise it's better to pay the little extra money more and have the option to take the bus back to the Cruise Terminal.
BUT IF YOU HAVE NO CASH AND NEED A TICKET YOU CAN PAY BY CREDIT CARD THIS WOULD BE AN OPTION.
Subject you want to go to Schwerin you better buy a Länderticket Schleswig-Holstein (Group Day Pass for groups of max. 5 persons):
Here you choose RED: special offers / Collection (Bahn-Tix Rail&Fly) / Laender Tickets and further offers.
Choose either between "Leisure and special offers e.g." or "Collective tickets e.g."
Press "Laender Tickets"
Press "Schleswig-Holstein und Hamburg" (but this ticket is also valid for Schwerin which is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania))
Press "No bike ticket"
And this ticket is also available with your credit card... so if you have problems to buy the mini-group-tickets for Lübeck or Hamburg in cash - just buy this ticket which is also valid for the journeys to Hamburg and Lübeck.
But if you want to go to Schwerin before 09.00 hrs on a weekday: check for the tickets you need to start before 09.00 hrs for Lübeck as trains to Schwerin go via Lübeck.
