The best way to buy is the Internet:

http://www.bahn.de/i/view/DEU/en/index.shtml

So can do it three monthes ahead of your day of travel until 10 minutes before scheduled departure.

To avoid problems with special German letters:

ä, ö, ü = ae, oe, ue
ß = ss

So your place of origin is Warnemuende.

Your destination is Schwerin Hbf (= Hauptbahnhof = Central Station).

Your date of travel: DD.MM.YYYY (!!!)

Your expected time of travel: HH:MM (24-hours-style, best 45 minutes after ship's arrival in Warnemünde)

Return journey:

Your date of travel: DD.MM.YYYY (!!!)

Your expected time of travel: HH:MM (24-hours-style, 90 minutes before ship's departure in Warnemünde or just as you wish - like here 6 pm)

No BahnCard as you will not have any 1-year-discount-pass for your once-in-your-lifetime travel.

Travel 2nd class if you want to go the most economic way and do not need extra comfort. The difference of 1st and 2nd class is presented here:
http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemunde-train-1st-class-vs-2nd-class.html

And then Search.

As there is more then one stop in Warnemünde. You got this warning. Your station's name is just

Warnemünde.

So you just confirm by click on Search.

The system show you three options around 07.00 hrs:

2nd option: IC Long-Distance-Train from Rostock to Schwerin = Ticket 13 for full fare tickets This is very interesting if you are a party of 2, 3, 4 or 5 and you like to have more comfort, speed and a restaurant car...

or if you want a little extra time in Schwerin and you are willing to pay a little extra ticket to Schwerin...
Explaination scroll below in orange.

If you want just to use one section on IC and use the rest of the day Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Day Pass for the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania) and you are travelling after 9 am: do not forget to adjust the station of origin Rostock instead of Warnemünde. Your day pass is valid after 9 am from Warnemünde to Rostock. Therefore no need to pay double.

1st and 3rd option: Commuter Trains (S-Bahn) to Warnemünde and Regional Trains from Rostock to Schwerin (direct way - the 1st option has an additional transfer on the way to Schwerin)
= Full Fare Tickets for on Regional Trains

Our specimen is now for the 3rd connection with one transfer in Rostock on regional trains:

So you just click Choose return trip in the third line.

Then you have to select your return journey:

1st option is the train most cruisers will use to be back in Warnemünde around dinner time.

2nd option is the IC Long-Distance-Train service to Rostock.

3rd option is same like 1st option but with additional transfer.

So select "Purchase" in the first line.

The full fare price will be 34.20 EUR (2010).

If you are willing to buy upto two different tickets you can go for

19.70 EUR (2010) as maximum price on Monday to Friday if you travel alone
18.00 EUR (2009) as maximum price on Saturday and Sunday if you travel alone
6.90 EUR (2010) as mamimum price on Monday to Friday if you travel in a party of 5
5.20 EUR (2010) as minimum price on Saturday and Sunday if you travel in a party of 5

Price vary due to selected train itineraries.

All actual 2010 prices see here:

Click on Online Ticket to save the shipping costs and you can cancel without problems until the day before your date of travel.

But you need to pay with same the credit card which you need to show to the conductor.

Click on "I wish to book without loggin in". You can cancel your ticket without penalty until the day before date of travel. So if you see on your cruise that the weather might to be good for a shore excursion to Schwerin, you can just to internet and can cancel. If you cancel the same day like travel there is a penalty of 15 EUR.

Fill out as requested.

Make a print-out of the ticket and have the ticket with you.

For other destinations you will get seperate instructions.

And here is the way described how you find the train station from your cruise terminal:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemunde-germany-train-station-guide.html

You can buy the tickets for Schwerin in the station building but due to limited opening hours and language skills let me explain you how to operate the ticket machines which you find after you get up the stairs and reached the station area. The Ländertickets are available here as well, but the price here is higher than in the ticket machines.

UPDATE: August 2009

Both machines have been upgraded to the newest generation which accepts cash and German Bankcards for destinations like Rostock and Bad Doberan and international credit cards for all other destinations as well:

So the new function is the acceptance of Euro-Change and Euro-Bills (max. amount vary to your individual total amount).

Full Fare Tickets are available at this machine.

Instructions as well through this link:

On regional trains there is no Reservation (only for annual season tickets for Hamburg).

Only if you are going to Hamburg on Friday, Saturday or Sunday you might better have a reservation if you use the IC long-distance-trains.

Buying Day Passes for Schwerin will be explained in a separate posting:

2nd option: Variation to go by IC Long-Distance-Train to and from Schwerin:

If you want just to use one section on IC and use the rest of the day Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Day Pass for the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania) and you are travelling after 9 am: do not forget to adjust the station of origin Rostock instead of Warnemünde. Your day pass is valid after 9 am from Warnemünde to Rostock. Therefore no need to pay double.

After you have clicked "Choose Return Trip" in the 2nd line of the previous page.

I choosed the IC-connection at 16.21 hrs for Warnemünde: "Purchase".

All ticket options are shown at once. You can decide to buy more expensive tickets or special treatment in 1st class.

You can compare the special fars to the full standard fare at the bottom.

As I guess that you want to travel most economic. If you are travelling alone: 38.00 EUR for saver tickets are cheaper than full paid 40.00 EUR: I would choose the 40.00 EUR ticket to keep my full flexibility Click on "Purchase".

If you are travelling with 2, 3, 4 or 5 see below. Then the Saver Tickets could be very interesting for you.

Click on Ticket without seat reservation - as normally this train is not very full on this section.

Click on Online Ticket to save the shipping costs and you can cancel without problems until the day before your date of travel.

But you need to pay with same the credit card which you need to show to the conductor.

Click on "I wish to book without logging in". You can cancel your ticket without penalty until the day before date of travel. So if you see on your cruise that the weather might to be good for a shore excursion to Berlin, you can just to internet and can cancel. If you cancel the same day like travel there is a penalty of 15 EUR.

If you are travelling with 2, 3, 4 or 5 persons AND choosed ICE for outward and return journey then you can make big savings with SparPreis 25, as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th not just got the 25% but 50% off 25%.
