Kiel, Germany

Willkommen in Deutschland!
Welcome to Germany!

Kiel is one of the German boarding points for cruises to the Baltic Sea and Norway. COSTA and MSC and some German lines start from here while Lines like HAL, Azamara call it in Transit.

I just want to give you some impressions but mostly people use this port to get to Lübeck or Hamburg.

Well, do not ask, what you should do in Kiel...

There is a castle...

... but not as famous as Heidelberg, Potsdam or Neuschwantein...

Kiel is a maritime city. The annual event "Kieler Woche" (yachting, regattas) is the event of the events if you like yachting.

The location at the Kiel Fjord (in German: Kieler Förde) makes it most beautiful to wake up early and to see how you enter the city:

So do not laugh: mostly I get on one of the harbour cruise ships and try to enjoy the place and the stay on the open deck.

Also the passage of the Kiel-Canal is absolutely great. Especially if you have the chance to do the full passage with your cruise-ship from Brunsbüttel to Kiel.

The sunrise was unforgettable.

Furhtermore you do great shopping in Kiel. Especially if you love alcohol. Due to the ferry terminals from Scandinavia there are so many specialists stores for cheap alcohol for those passengers who just come to Kiel to get drunk on their ferry and just make it to the store to fill up the trunk.

There is more in Kiel. Check here yourself:

I will arrive in Kiel on May 02, 2009 again. If I discover more I will let you know.

  1. Dear Hein (I will NOT write the Bloed part as I think you are just brilliant!) I just wanted to say that you are wonderful! Thank you for having all this information available for Bloed people like myself! When my husband said "why", I said "because Hein said so!" Thank you Hein.
    Sincerely,
    Jamie
